My Art Collage 2021

Just like last year, instead of the ARTvsARTIST challenge I decided to make a collage of most of my works from 2021. As usual, I've been trying to follow the rules by drawing something widely popular or fashionable at the moment, but I've also been drawing more stuff that I find interesting so you probably won't be able to recognize all characters. I also made a banner for my other social media.

As for the number of my Instagram followers and likes, 2021 wasn't so generous. After I reached 500 followers last year, I've been struggling with 50 new followers who have been subscribing and unsubscribing and dancing around the "magical" number of 550 for more than a year, which was surprising and hard to explain. Was it the new algorithm or did my drawings drop in quality? Many recent posts barely got 15 likes and it's still confusing. Anyway, it looks like this:

This may seem like I'm complaining, but I'm actually confused because I'm not sure how this works anymore. There's this quote "It's not just about numbers, it's about content, trust, interest and engagement" and I guess I'm doing something wrong. I want to believe I'm doing my best, although constant poor reception of some of my proudest works doesn't make much sense. True, I have my regular job that often interferes with my drawing plans, so this is just a hobby that doesn't bring me any financial profit at all. I shouldn't be concerned or even write about this issue, but I follow several artists who earn money this way and they also have similar problems.

Whatever all that means, it won't stop me from doing what I've been doing all this time. I feel thankful for all your support, comments, likes, reposts etc. and I hope to continue keeping your interest in my future works.

Daredevil (COTM Dec 2021)

Just around the time it was announced that Daredevil would come back to the MCU, the palette for this month's Colors Of The Month challenge (by @universeofmarkers on Instagram) appeared in my thread and it fit almost perfectly into my plan.

First, I'm aware it's an art challenge for markers, but this combination seemed like destiny. Secondly, I tried to use only suggested colours, so I decided to go with a more cartoony version of his suit. Still, I barely used latte (only for his skin) and mocha (for his eyes and the DD logo) and I had to add black with 80% transparency for shading.

And instead of drawing something new that would be finished the same day, I turned to one of my older drawings and tried to modify it. God... I don't know what I was thinking. It was already a combination of two previous drawings and I spent three days struggling, drowning and suffocating in too many layers, creating new, changing some old flaws and adding some new elements (and maybe some new mistakes?)...

But there was no turning back, so this is it. And I hope this was the last time I recycled it. 😉

COTM - November 2021

I came across an interesting art challenge and although it's created for markers and not digital drawings, I couldn't resist to draw something with their suggested palette for November.

The challenge is by Universe Of Markers and it's called Colors of the month. I liked their choice so much that I decided to draw something with my regular palette for my avatar (light skin tone, brown, orange and green) and then I used their colours for some kind of a lighting effect, especially the three pale tones (fog, icicle and frozen pond). I'm not sure what kind of light source would produce this kind of effect, but I wanted to experiment and I believe it turned out pretty good. The fourth one, red (or cranberry), is for the base colour of the door.

What do you think? I hope they create the lighting illusion I had in mind. 😉

My Spidersona 2021

I know the Spidersona art challenge is a couple of years old, but since Spider-Man is one of my most favourite superheroes, I often think of redesigning my original drawing or even expanding my own little Spider-verse.

And now here it is, a new version! I changed the design a little bit (mostly the mask), but kept my original colour palette. I also kept the wooden utility pole, because as I mentioned last time, I live in a relatively small town and these poles could be the only way of my "transport" as a local Spider-Man. 😄

Another reason why I decided to redraw it now is to write something about the ongoing new Spider-Man movie craze (No Way Home). Of course I can't wait to see it, but it's WandaVision all over again - fans fabricating theories and artists drawing unofficial posters that eventually turned out false and disappointed a lot of people. So, as far as I'm concerned, no new trailers, no crazy predictions about the plot, characters and actors, stop adding to the unrealistic hype and just wait for the damn movie. ❤ 🕷

The Soundlovers (Happy Halloween!)

I tried to continue with my personal Spooktober drawings, but it's become clear I won't be able to draw everything I've planned. This will have to be my Halloween post, so - Happy Halloween! 🎃

This drawing is inspired by a 90's music video "Run Away" (1996) performed by a Eurodance project/band The Soundlovers. The video itself is pretty creepy (a woman kills men and she and her helper perform some kind of taxidermy on them) and my first intention was to draw a scary, almost gory drawing, but I decided to redraw it and here's the more "toned-down" version. I just wasn't sure if the original drawing would be OK for social media such as Instagram.

As for the Soundlovers, it was a music project that consisted of three Italian producers: DJ Molella, Phil Jay, Roberto Santini, and two singers : Nathalie Aarts and German Leguizamon. But the performer I drew is actually another band member, Kim Gallina, who appeared in their two first videos, "Run Away" and "People", but sadly died in 1999. Their other hits were "Another day", "Surrender", "Mirando el mar" and "Walking" and they still bring me back in time whenever I hear them. 🎵

Squid Game

I know Squid Game isn't a horror show, but it can be scary, shocking and gory at times, plus there are so many costumes that can be cosplayed or turned into Halloween costumes, so I put it on my Spooktober list and drew some kind of fanart.

One of my biggest phobias is ranidaphobia - the fear of frogs (or more precisely toads), so what would happen if during the red light/green light game one of them hopped in front of me while I'm supposed to be standing still? You guess it easily - it would definitely be game over for me as I would start to panic, shake, scream and try to run away in horror. 😔

I can't explain the reason for this phobia. I'm OK with other amphibians, even reptiles or spiders, but when it comes to toads, my soul is sooo ready to leave my body. To conclude, for me no game from the show would be scarier than a sudden appearance of a simple small harmless frog. 😱 Do you have similar irrational fears?

Black Spot (Zone Blanche)

As this is considered to be the spookiest month, I decided to work on some Halloween-esque drawings. 🎃 I already have a few (hopefully) interesting ideas.

The first drawing is about the French-Belgian supernatural TV show Black Spot (Zone Blanche) where three detectives - Lauréne, Teddy Bear and Franck - investigate mysterious cases in a small town of Villefranche. The town is surrounded by a dark forest, so if you're into mysteries, horror and thriller, this show might be for you.

And yes, there is a cryptic creature, a cute guinea pig (Teddy Bear's pet) and some ominous crows, so I included them in my drawing too. 😉

Cloud 9 Superstore

Superstore is one of those TV shows that sneaked up on me and blew my mind. It may seem like just a silly comedy show about a group of workers at a Cloud 9 Superstore (something like Target), but the characters and storylines were so incredible (and actually funny!) that I had to binge watch all 6 seasons.

I chose two characters for my drawing, America Ferrera as Amy and Ben Feldman as Jonah with their Rachel/Ross "will they/won't they" chemistry, although the whole cast is absolutely amazing (even if their characters tend to be annoying). And even though they created a kind of world I'd love to live in from the very first episode, the last season was something out of this world. 🤯

I know some TV shows dealt with the Covid-19 situation in their storylines (SWAT, NCIS, The Good Doctor...), but the sixth season of Superstore made it feel real and still somehow entertaining. They covered many aspects of 2019/2020 in such a familiar way, from wearing masks in the store, quarantine and toilet paper shortage to online shopping and the delivery service - everything we've actually gone through in our ordinary lives. Plus their "Superstore" humour, already established in previous seasons. 🤣

There is so much more to this show (it deals with important issues such as human rights, racism, immigration etc.) and maybe it won't leave the same effect on everyone, but it quickly landed among my top 5 favourite TV shows ever. 😍

Storm Area 51 (2021)

I'm back on track and trying to finish some drawings I had planned before but unfortunately missed the dates. This one's about the second anniversary of Storm Area 51, a silly Facebook event about raiding Area 51 and freeing aliens, a kind of a harmless hoax that turned into something completely different, like parties and music festivals in the desert.

One of the results was a trend among artists to draw themselves freeing the aliens that were being kept there and this is my new version of that art challenge. First time I "rescued" an "original" alien (common little green aliens 👽), but this time I'm helping a xenomorph and a facehugger escape. I'm so glad I got to finish this, even if it's a bit too late, because this scene was on my mind for a very long time and I'm happy it didn't go to waste. Hope you like it too. 👽👍

Nightcrawler & Lockjaw

My most favourite superpower is teleportation, so I finally drew my favourite Marvel's teleporting superheroes Nightcrawler from X-Men and Lockjaw from Inhumans. For Nightcrawler I chose the bearded hipster-like X-Men Red version from 2018 and Lockjaw is here just a puppy, although he's actually 5 ft (1.52 m) tall and weighs 1240 lbs (562.45 kg) when he's fully grown up.

For this drawing of the Taskmaster I used some images of the latest Hot Toys figure as a reference (the official MCU look, as seen in the movie Black Widow). I chose the archer version, where the Taskmaster mimics Hawkeye's skills.

Captain America (TFATWS)

Let's continue with the review of my new Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite drawing tablet. This time I tested the Clip Studio Paint and drew Captain America (Sam Wilson). Again, I have no complaints, both Krita and CSP are doing their job, the only problem could be my inexperience with this kind of drawing (directly on the screen with the S Pen), at least until I get used to it.

Also, this drawing had more details than the last one, so it was more complicated. When I shared it on my desktop computer, I noticed some imperfections that wouldn't have been there if I had drawn it on my computer as usual. But, like I said, I'll need more time to get used to it.

Here's my first drawing on my new tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite with the S Pen, and I have no complaints so far. I admit I struggle with drawing directly on the screen, but that's probably because it's my first time. Nevertheless, I'm happy with how the drawing turned out. It took me a great deal of trials and errors (especially with the new programs), but the final result looks like it was drawn on any of my older tablets. BTW, this one was done in Krita.

As for the drawing itself, it's the result of some weird brainstorming. I started with that famous scene from TFATWS and somehow ended with this. So, there is a story behind it, but let's leave it for some other time.

Riddick's Summer

Because of the scorching weather and relentless heatwaves these days, I chose the movie The Chronicles of Riddick as my inspiration for this year's summer illustration.

So here's my avatar or my "Riddick persona" (Riddicksona?) dressed as the titular character on the planet of Crematoria, plus the blade thingies and some other details. Welcome to the season of constant sweating and suffering! 🥵

As for the movie itself, both The Chronicles (2004) and the first one, Pitch Black (2000), are the kind of movies I've watched probably more than ten times so far and I'd watch them over and over again. I'm not so sure about the third movie in the franchise (simply named Riddick, from 2013), but if I come across it on TV, I guess I would. 😉 And, of course, I'll watch the fourth one (Furya) when it comes out (although I don't have many expectations anymore).

Loki Variants Challenge

Here's my #lokisona for #lokivariantschallenge started by @mayventura_art (on Instagram and Twitter).

I added a few details that I believe define some aspects of me: I drew recognizable Loki's horns as bull horns because I'm a Taurus, the scepter consists of a pencil, a paint brush and a stylus, I'm wearing two-finger drawing gloves and there's my logo on my chest. And I'm obviously a fan of capes, cloaks or necessarily long robes. 🤪 Plus my favourite Infinity Stone - the Space Stone - enclosed in the Tesseract.

Batwoman

So, the second season of Batwoman is over. Does anyone watch this show? Or even more importantly, does anyone like or at least tolerate it? 🤔

I'm asking that because many people roll their eyes when they hear about it. And I should be honest, the first season was a bit disappointing, especially because of Alice/Beth. She had too much screen time and was very annoying, although Rachel Skarsten actually did amazing job (her role reminded me a lot of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn). So I guess the problem was the writing.

And then, one of the things they did right - casting Ruby Rose as Kate Kane - went wrong (or at least it seemed at the moment). She left the show and many things about the second season had to be rewritten to adapt them to the new Batwoman, Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder. Surprisingly enough, it all worked out and I actually liked this season! Even Alice wasn't such a nuisance anymore - her new storyline was much better and even made her likeable.

But feel free to take this with a grain of salt, because I have a soft spot for the Arrowerse and CW dramas and to be honest, for me it's the closest TV representation of the classic Batman and the 90s Gotham-esque lore we have at the moment (yep, somehow I keep ignoring the TV show Gotham). At the end we finally got Batwing, Ryan got rid of Kate's shadow and fully became the Batwoman, plus there are some new versions of classic Batman's villains on their way, so I'm not ashamed to say I'm looking forward to the third season.

Invincible

If you're a fan of superheroes, another must-see TV show is, of course, Invincible.

It's animated and it's based on a comic series of the same name. Among other things, I believe it's become more popular because of their treatment of violent and bloody scenes, which we don't see often (or at all) in some "mainstream" family-friendly comic book movies. I guess you've noticed a rise of popularity of superheroes who don't mind getting their hands dirty, such as Homelander from The Boys or US Agent from The Falcon & The Winter Soldier and even Jupiter's Legacy tried to do something similar. Well, Invincible goes at least one step further.

OK, maybe it's not the best way to sell you this show, but it's not all about that. There are many interesting characters and storylines and it's definitely worth watching.
