For this year's #styluary, an art challenge during the month of February when artists draw something in other artists' styles, I chose to draw my avatar in style of Dušan Vukotić, our animator who won an Oscar in 1962 for his short film Surogat (The Substitute).
Yes, it happened a long time ago, during Yugoslavia, and it was the first non-American short animated film to win an Oscar. It even beat Disney and Warner Bros. that year! The studio behind it was Zagreb Film, a Croatian film company founded in 1953. Vukotić was one of the co-founders and he made many award-winning shorts (such as The Game, which was another Oscar nominee in 1964), as well as a number of full-length movies.
Zagreb Film is still working today and it has produced not only animated films, but also documentaries and several feature films. It's become widely known for animations such as Professor Balthazar, Inspector Mask and The Little Flying Bears, many of which you can watch on YouTube, if you're interested.
