"For 20 years one small team at Marvel Studios did the most important job in the entire MCU. You just never knew their names. 

They were the Visual Development team. 13 artists. Comic book obsessives. The people who looked at a script, or sometimes no script at all, and drew what Iron Man's armor should feel like. What Loki should look like when he walks into a room. What the Avengers should look like standing together for the first time. 

Every iconic frame of the MCU started as a sketch on one of their desks. Ryan Meinerding ran the team. He has been there since the first Iron Man movie in 2008. 

This Tuesday Disney's new CEO sent an email. 1,000 layoffs across the company. Marvel got hit with roughly 8 percent. And the Visual Development team was almost entirely wiped out. 

One artist named Wesley Burt posted about the moment he got let go. He said the meeting happened in a conference room that still had his own Loki mural painted on the wall. 

Former team member Michael Uwandi went on the record with Polygon. He said the team's value was that they understood the comics on a level outsiders never could. He said losing them means the MCU is about to lose its house style. 

Another anonymous source said the quiet part out loud. Other Marvel departments were already using AI in their work. Costume design. Art departments. He said he would not be surprised if that was part of the decision. Disney is replacing the team with freelancers hired per project. No in-house artists. No shared language. No continuity. Avengers: Doomsday starts production without them. Spider-Man: Brand New Day starts production without them. 20 years of loyalty. One email. The artists who built Marvel are gone. And the fans are the ones who will feel it next."

Gravity Fish 2026

It's time for a "Throwback Thursday"! That means I'm reuploading an older drawing: Gravity Fish, fictional characters from Angry Birds video games. Yep, my last post reminded me of my Angry Birds days, especially the "Space" spinoff with some kind of fish-like planets in aquatic levels ("Pig Dipper"). And as far as I know, they don't have a name, Gravity Fish is what I decided to call them back then. 

They're alive, but they don't have any specific role in the game. They're asleep and they only open their eyes if Angry Birds hit them and that's it! They don't move, they're just like little living aquatic planets with their own gravity, which is important to take into consideration when you launch your birds to hit the bad piggies. In my opinion, they don't get the fame and glory they deserve, but I guess that's just me, I often fall for such weird stuff that other people rarely notice.

I first posted this drawing in 2019. For this repost I just changed their position and some small details, because 2019 and 2020 were crucial years for defining my drawing style and that's the way I'm basically still doing it today.

Anyway... does anyone know what I'm talking about at all? 🤣

Birds

My top three fictional birds from pop culture: Calimero, Duo and Red, including their famous lines.

Calimero is an animated chicken and an Italian pop icon who also became popular in many neighbouring countries. His image was everywhere when I was a kid in the 80s, from cartoons to toys. I still quote one of his most famous lines: "But it's an injustice!", especially as I'm getting older and it's hard to deal with all the bu11$hit that's been happening. In a way, he's become my spirit animal.

I don't think the green owl Duo from Duolingo needs much introduction. I'm on my 607th day streak of learning French and brushing up on my Italian. OK, also German sometimes, because I don't get to use it very often, so doing some German lessons helps a little bit. As for the quote here, Duo is famous for torturing his subscribers by constantly reminding them it's time to do lessons every day. I don't know how much I'll actually learn, but it's been fun demistifying secrets of the French language.

Red is the most recognizable character from the Angry Birds franchise. I played almost every video game, watched the series and the movies, as well as collected some merchandise. I like them, especially Red, because I relate to their constant grumpiness, dissatisfaction etc. I'd like to believe I'm usually friendly and funny on the outside, but there's a whole different story on the inside, especially when I'm forced to helplessly witness the unfairness, injustice and stupidity around me.

Area 51 (Redraw)

"Storm Area 51" was an unusual event that took place on September 20, 2019. The idea was to gather people who'd raid the secret military base in the Nevada desert and find out the truth about aliens, but it ended as a music festival and an Internet meme.

One of the jokes was to help aliens escape Area 51, so I started my own art challenge where my avatar saves a different alien each time, mostly recognizable creatures from pop culture. So far I've "saved" a common green/gray alien, a baby xenomorph with a hatching facehugger, Alf and T. Ocellus from the show Alien: Earth.

And this is actually a redraw of my original 2019 drawing, because I wanted to make it more similar to my other "alien rescue" works, as I found my drawing style later and continued drawing that way. You can still find the original in my gallery if you scroll far enough. 😉

The 2026 version is yet to come in September, of course. I'm planning to keep this art trend alive and there's plenty of comic book, TV and movie aliens to save! 👽
