Styluary 2026

For this year's #styluary, an art challenge during the month of February when artists draw something in other artists' styles, I chose to draw my avatar in style of Dušan Vukotić, our animator who won an Oscar in 1962 for his short film Surogat (The Substitute).

Yes, it happened a long time ago, during Yugoslavia, and it was the first non-American short animated film to win an Oscar. It even beat Disney and Warner Bros. that year! The studio behind it was Zagreb Film, a Croatian film company founded in 1953. Vukotić was one of the co-founders and he made many award-winning shorts (such as The Game, which was another Oscar nominee in 1964), as well as a number of full-length movies.

Zagreb Film is still working today and it has produced not only animated films, but also documentaries and several feature films. It's become widely known for animations such as Professor Balthazar, Inspector Mask and The Little Flying Bears, many of which you can watch on YouTube, if you're interested.

The Wraith (Stargate Atlantis)

Last month I decided to rewatch all seasons of Stargate Atlantis. I remember being fascinated by the alien species the Wraith, so here they are in my style! They're a vampiric, hive-based species that feed on humans by sucking their life force using suckers on their hands. Each hive has a queen, commanders, keepers and drones.

The males look basically the same (black clothes and long white hair) and different characters are often played by the same actors. Interestingly enough, they don't have names, but Lt. Colonel Shepperd often gives them random names, such as Bob, Steve, Mike, Todd, Kenny etc.

The queens are the most interesting, although we don't see them that often during all five seasons. Unlike the males, they have different styles and hair colours. The one I drew is the first one we meet on the show and to me she's the most fascinating and memorable among them (technically, she was a Keeper in the pilot, but OK). And another fun fact: all queens on the show are played by only one actress, Andee Frizzell!

The Nihilist Penguin

I present you the latest Internet sensation, the Nihilist Penguin in my drawing style! 🐧

"These penguins are all heading to the open water to the right. But one of them caught our eye, the one in the center. He would neither go towards the feeding grounds at the edge of the ice nor return to the colony.

Shortly afterwards, we saw him heading straight towards the mountains some 70 km away. Dr. Anley explained that even if he caught him and brought him back to the colony, he would immediately head right back for the mountains. BUT WHY?

He was born among thousands, yet somehow lived unseen surrounded by warmth, but never held by it. Always a step behind, as if hoping someone would notice and wait. No one ever did.

When winter tightened its grip there was no space left for him, not because he was weak, but because the world had alreadv moved on, so he left. No fight, no farewell. The mountains welcomed him with silence. Every step hurt, but staying would have hurt more.

At night, the cold pressed in, yet it felt familiar. The wind listened when no one else ever had, and the snow strangely was kinder than being ignored. Somewhere far behind him was safety. Somewhere ahead was uncertainty. But for the first time, the direction was his own.

Maybe he wasn't walking away from the colony. Maybe he was walking toward meaning because sometimes the ones who don't fit the path are the only ones brave enough to choose a new one. And even if he could not fly, he would climb the highest mountains so that he might touch the sky."
