Grogu: Revenge of the Freauggos

Grogu: Revenge of the Freauggos

Freauggos are a semi-sentient carbon-based species. They're amphibians, but actually classified as aquatic because in Star Wars lore many lifeforms in this category often fit into other categories (they include creatures that can breathe water, air or both).

There are many subspecies within this species. They are predominantly green, but also brown, blue, red or purple creatures, usually with horns, especially in grown-up stages. They have a stout body, big protruding eyes, limbs folded underneath and no tail. Their skin is glandular, sometimes with toxic secretions. They can get quite big and although they mostly hop on all four limbs, there is evidence of somewhat humanoid forms.

The planet of origin hasn't been established yet. They can be found everywhere, especially the smaller subspecies, but the greatest concentration of species diversity is in tropical rainforests. Possible planets of origin include Felucia or Joralla and even Scarif.

Through two seasons of The Mandalorian we've seen Grogu occasionally feasting on smaller Freauggos, so it would be interesting to see him meeting some of the bigger and more frightening members of the species.

Grace (Parkasaurus)

After so much time here's another version of Grace, a recurring character from video games played by Josh on his YouTube channel Let's Game It Out. This Grace is from his Parkasaurus video (13 Aug 2021).

But who is Grace and why is she in a lot of his games? I don't actually remember the exact origin, although officially she first appeared in his Startup Company video from April 2019. The thing is that Josh sometimes names one of the characters Grace or there's already a Grace present in a game and then somehow he finds ways to make her a "star" of his videos and she usually ends up in unexpected situations. I've drawn five of them so far, with plans to draw more whenever I feel inspired.

It's not easy to explain Josh's playing style. He ignores the rules of a gameplay and tries to explore as many unbelievable solutions and glitches as possible, often breaking a game, which results in hilarious videos. It's not your average gaming video, it's comedy gold!

This Grace is an employee at the Parkasaurus and the same character appears in different roles. As you start building your park, she's the first character you meet - first she's a ticket seller, later she works at a fruit stand etc. She's supposed to be a background character because the goal of the game is to build a dinosaur park, but it's never the case when Josh gets his hands on a game. 😉

I usually add something from the games in my drawings to make them more interesting. The dino is a Wuerhosaurus (of course, Josh calls it a Warehousesaurus 😄), basically the only dino species for the most part of the video, and Grace is holding tickets and a dinosaur egg. The pose is from @theposearchives.

No AI "Art"

No, this isn't a March of Robots post, I just drew my Robosona design in Ghostbusters logo style to write a little rant. 😉

What to say about AI "art" that hasn't been said these last few months? I'm not actually an artist and I don't earn anything from whatever I create here. It's just a hobby, but I still consider myself a member of this community and it's difficult to ignore this issue.

When it comes to everyday users who don't even think of any kind of art, it seems like it could be treated as any other filter - if you need a new profile picture etc., something as simple as that (although there are copyright isuess too). The main problem is when they try to make money off it, calling themselves artists and creating something they claim is theirs, without taking art theft implications into consideration.

Basically, it makes creating art look like a chore, something we're forced to do and they present this "solution" as a shortcut, an easy way out. There's difference between brainstorming, drawing ideas and sketches, perfecting your final piece as long as it takes or just typing prompts in an AI generator program. You draw because you like it and if you want (or if you're lucky enough) you can make money off your own talent and effort, not by stealing.

Obviously this kind of technology is here to stay and I guess it could have some useful applications if dealt properly, but not as an ultimate substitute for real artists or a means of infringing artists' rights. We need new laws or any other way to define or repurpose its use.

Webruary 2023

February is the shortest month of the year, the work's been overwhelming and stressful and although we had a week off, I spent most of that time being sick (and still am), so it's a wonder that I've also managed to squeeze two more art challenges in before the end of the month! 👍 I actually merged two of them into one, Webruary and A Pose Challenge, both organised by @tonycartoonish (the latter in association with @theposearchives).

Drawing my Spider-Man persona is always such a blast and dramatic poses make them even better. ❤ I've been developing this character since the first Spider-Verse movie and I believe it's finally close to perfection. There are some of my favourite colours again, mostly orange and green, but also other earthy tones. The biggest challenge was the head, more precisely the mask protecting the hero's identity. My glasses became some kind of goggles with ear protectors, inspired by Impulse (DC) and Hawks (My Hero Academia), the idea of a hoodie came from Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen and a face shield from Silk (Marvel).

I still don't have a name for my spider-superhero and it's hard to think of anything that hasn't already been used (the most recent try is Davorachnid, combining my alias Davor with arachnid, but it sounds weird) and if you keep wondering why he's so chubby compared to the reference photos, it's because I'm trying to stay close to depiction of my real height and weight.

Styluary 2023

Styluary is a February art challenge during which artists are supposed to draw something inspired by another artist and do it every day of the month. As usual, I don't have enough time to commit to drawing something new each day, plus I've been sick and haven't been feeling well lately, so I can only finish the sketch for this drawing.

My choice is Hirohiko Araki's style, more precisely characters from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure in Western pop culture style, as I decided to binge all anime parts and got a little bit obsessed with it. His characters have specific appearance, so I also tried to contribute to the whole JoJo feeling. I chose my favourite colours, hairstyle, accessories and favourite pieces of clothing but also added JBA's details such as a crop-top vest and little hearts etc. I'm really happy with how it turned out and I believe I got this kind of style right.

As for JoJos, I'm fan of Joseph and Jolyne, but my favourite stand is Jotaro's Star Platinum.

Wednesday

This is another drawing I started last year but finally finished now. I hope you recognize the titular character from Wednesday (including Thing), The Addams Family spin-off that's still among top 10 popular shows on Netflix.

I think I chose too many drawings for December (hoping I'll have more time during the holidays) but I've decided to put those plans aside, at least for the time being. There are some interesting February art challenges I'd like to participate in and it's getting harder to catch up. My New Year's resolutions aren't going according to plan, because I'm obviously not ready to let go of my additional work obligations so I keep doing the same thing I promised I wouldn't, which had already proved to be time consuming and nerve-racking. At this point I'm basically Thanos: "Fine, I'll do it myself!" but not as a villain - more like when it's become painfully clear that something won't be done if you don't do it yourself. 🤷‍♂️
