Happy International Day of Education! (Jan 24)
Another day in a classroom,
Teaching, sharing information
With students, our new hope,
Our pride, our next generation!
They often sulk or roll their eyes,
But there's the truth that's guaranteed:
Today's youth fails at basic skills -
How to write, count or even read.
They don't think they should know it all;
When asked a question, they keep calm:
Look! A phone, a prized possession!
Such vast knowledge right in their palm!
Oh, that sense of tragic defeat
Just creates more doubtful teachers,
Their hard work, effort, lesson plans
Now became just pointless features.
And one day all this will be lost,
Memories that a few mention,
Monuments of something that was:
Proof of better education.
So I made this memorial,
A reminder of all I knew,
This shrine of my naivety
Covered in moss and pigeon poo.

Yes, the poem is mine, no it's not AI. I've been writing this kind of (silly) poetry in Croatian, English or German all my life. This one is inspired by my struggles as an educator, it consists of 6 stanzas with 4 lines, 8 syllables in each line and an ABCB rhyme scheme.
The accompanying drawing is a redraw of my illustration from 2022. It's very similar to the original, just redrawn as a statue. It represented teaching as my superpower and also came with a rant about everything that's wrong in the school system. I guess some things never change.
