My mermaid for this year's MerMay challenge has an interesting background story. I was inspired by the pose and the looks I saw in the official video by a Croatian contestant for this year's Eurosong contest (singer Albina, song "Tick Tock"). In fact, if this drawing had been finished before the Eurovision, it would've been my way to support my country, but as you can see I'm late, it's been about two weeks, so... I decided to leave the pose but scrap other initial ideas.
In the video she's sitting surrounded by teddy bears and they were my first choice too, but then I thought - wait, what about water-type Pokémon? So now she's sitting on a rock surrounded by sea, hugging a plushie Magikarp, accompanied by a little Staryu. I wanted to keep it simple, with the emphasis on the mermaid, so I didn't want to overcrowd the drawing with too many Pokémon.
And also, I wasn't sure how to draw a plushie, so I hope you can interpret my Magikarp as such by the "texture" and the button instead of his eye. It would've been more obvious with a teddy bear or if I had drawn Magikarp more like a toy or a rag doll, but I hope it's not so bad. At least I got to draw some more Pokémon again.
