The Flash (Global Running Day 2023)

Global Running Day celebrates the sport of running and it's held annually on the first Wednesday of June (this year it's on June 7). And what better way to celebrate it than by drawing the fastest man alive? ⚡

I think I mentioned before that Superman and Batman were my OG superheroes when I was a kid, but after the 90's show starring John Wesley Shipp, The Flash (Barry Allen) joined the DC superhero roster. So I was glad when they decided to add the character to the Arrowverse in 2014, with Grant Gustin in the titular role. And it was about time for me to draw him, as the show is coming to its end (although I still haven't watched the last season). I'm not sure what to think about Ezra Miller, but I'm looking forward to the new movie that's coming out this summer.

Apart from The Flash, I also like other speedsters, such as Wally West and Impulse and when it comes to Marvel, there are Quicksilver from Avengers and X-Men, Yo-Yo from Agents Of SHIELD and recently Makkari from Eternals.

I've already drawn some of the speedsters throughout the years, but somehow I managed to skip the OG Flash. 🤷‍♂️ I hope that with this drawing everything feels right with the world now. 😊 The pose reference is from @theposearchives.

SFeraKon 2023

I finally found time for a post about this year's SFeraKon, a Croatian sci-fi convention held at The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (The University of Zagreb). After missing it for three years, it was so refreshing to finally get back there again. ❤

This year's trip was very special to me, because I skipped two "light" versions of 2020 and 2021 and then I got Covid last year and had to skip it again. 😡 The thing I liked the most was how the time seemed to have stopped. Everything I like about SFeraKon was there, including so many familiar faces and people I usually communicate with via social media. Interesting guests, lectures, quizzes, games, cosplay... it was like good old days.

I'm glad that Star Trek got into the spotlight again, mainly because of two of the guests of honour, Nicole de Boer (Ezri Dax from "Deep Space 9") and Lolita Fatjo (an assistant to the executive producer and a pre-production coordinator on several Star Trek properties). But what really surprised me was the cosplay choice - a lot of manga and anime, fantasy and video game characters, some Star Wars and Star Trek too, but almost none of the comic book characters! 🤔 I'm aware the MCU's been kind of in the gutter lately (although I saw a Thor there!), but where are the DC's favourites such as Harley Quinn or Joker? Is the comic book movie fatigue taking its toll? It was just... weird. 🤷‍♂️

And now my art - as you can see, I drew myself with some of the props I've made so far: the Infinity Gauntlet, the Tesseract, Captain America and Captain Marvel hats, plus the only full cosplay I've ever done, Luigi. There are also badges, keychains, magnets (Avengers, Spider-Man, Dark Phoenix, Star Wars etc.), but I haven't made anything new for a very long time.

Anyway, no matter which trends will be popular in the future, I hope I'll be part of SFeraKon for a long time to come.

MerMay 2023

For this year's MerMay challenge I chose Bubbles (#bubblesDTIYS challenge), a #mermay2023 mascot created by @lb.illustrates.

MerMay was created by @tombancroft1 and as usual, the challenge is to draw a mermaid every day during May. Once again I didn't have time for that, so I'm participating only in this #DTIYS part.

And of course, the pose for this drawing is by @theposearchives.

School... so far

It's my dad's birthday today and although it would be a perfect opportunity to post something nice, I decided to look back at these years without him and try to imagine what he would have thought about my achievements.

I know I don't owe anyone anything and I should create my own world, but he was so proud of me getting a degree and becoming a teacher and when I was about to start that journey, he suddenly passed away. So, what's the situation today? Is there anything he would still be proud of?

My weakness is the combination of my dedication to work and my sense of justice. I'm aware the rules change as soon as you leave college and start working in a system you aren't really prepared for, but so much injustice hurts me to the point that I've become worried about my health.

No matter how proud my dad was of my success, there's something that keeps resonating with me - his words "I'm just afraid you'll go crazy working in a school". It's been 17 years since he died, but I keep witnessing and experiencing so many things that could eventually lead to his premonition, such as disrespect, mobbing, sexual harassment, local politics, corruption, hurtful blind ambition... At this point we should be happy that the kids are mostly OK while the adults are fighting bizarre endless wars, but it hurts me to see how the focus has shifted from our students' problems to our petty disagreements.

And to all those saying that teacher's work is easy because of oh sooo much free time, just shut up and try walking a week in my shoes. So much unnecessary pressure, unpaid overtime hours and made-up obligations to feed someone else's ego - believe me, it's the same everywhere you work, no matter if it's for the government or in a private sector. Our educational system is no exception.

So, dad, happy birthday, although it's not the birthday card you'd expect or deserve. And you don't have to be proud of my occupation, I just hope you're proud of the person I've become.

ToonMe 2023

It's gonna... gonna... gonna... gonna... It's gonna be May! 🎶

Now that these "famous lyrics" by N'Sync opened this topic, let me celebrate my birthday month with another drawing challenge. Here's my new ToonMe drawing, but with a little twist - as usual, one half is the actual photo, the other half is the illustration - and this time there's a plain wall on the realistic side and my imagination on the cartoon side.

I didn't want to overcrowd the drawing, so I chose a few characters or items from this and last year that represent most of my interests you can usually find in my artwork: Marvel, DC, Star Trek, Star Wars, anime, pop culture trends, art challenges etc. There are 12 clues, some are easy, some are not so obvious, so how many can you guess?
